The journey

The 7 Phases
of the Agoge

The Agoge was the Spartan formation journey — not a programme, but a passage. Seven phases. Each asks something of you. Each gives something back.

Scroll

The Agoge was not a training. It was a passage — a series of trials that turned a boy into a man. Not by making him harder, but by making him more real.

Project Leonidas has retranslated this journey into the inner journey of the modern man. Seven phases that together form a complete transformation process. You do not need to go through them all in order — but every man who seriously engages with himself recognises them all.

The seven phases

Apothesis is the moment of honest confrontation. Not who you want to be, not who others see in you — but who you are now. Without the mask you wore to perform, to please, to survive.

This is the hardest phase. Not because it is painful — but because it demands real honesty. Most men live their entire lives without truly asking this question.

Apothesis is the beginning of the Agoge. Everything that follows builds on this.

I

For the first time you look without filter at who you have become.

Apochorisis literally means "the withdrawal". In this phase you learn to distinguish between what is yours and what you once took on — from your father, your mother, your environment.

Patterns you have been carrying for years. Expectations that were never yours. The mask you wore because it was once necessary, but now only costs weight.

Letting go is not weakness. It is the beginning of freedom.

II

You lay down what is not yours.

Agón is the Greek word for struggle, contest, tension. In this phase you meet the voice that says you are not enough. That you are not worth it. That it may work for others, but not for you.

This voice is not your enemy — it is a protector whose time has passed. In the Agón phase you learn to see it for what it is, and consciously choose whether to let it lead.

Here you do not fight against others. You fight for yourself.

III

The inner adversary becomes visible.

Anoixis means opening. After the confrontation, the letting go and the struggle, space emerges. Space for something most men have never learned: being fully present.

Not behind glass. Not at a distance. But truly — in contact with yourself, with others, with life.

Vulnerability in this phase is not weakness. It is the gateway to real strength. A man who can stand open does not need to hide behind anything.

IV

The heart opens.

Pyrosis — from the Greek pyr, fire. This is the phase of transformation. What the previous phases loosened is converted into energy here.

Fire burns what no longer serves. But fire also forges. From this phase comes clarity: about who you are, what you want, and why it matters.

The Pyrosis phase is experienced by many men as the most liberating. Not because it is easy — but because it is real.

V

What no longer serves burns away.

Syndesmos means bond, connection, brotherhood. In this phase you discover that growth is not a solo journey.

Men who see you. Who hold you. Who challenge you to be more than you thought you could be. Not in competition — but in service of each other's growth.

The Spartans knew it: a man alone can be brave. A circle of men is invincible. Syndesmos is the moment you stop fighting alone and learn to support and be supported.

VI

Brotherhood as foundation.

Telestai — completed, finished, initiated. This is the seventh and final phase of the Agoge.

You return to your life, to your work, to your relationships. But you are not the same as the one who started this journey. You are grounded. Clear. You know who you are and what you want.

Telestai is not an endpoint — it is a new baseline. From here you lead differently. You are present differently. You choose differently.

This is what the Agoge exists for.

VII

You return — but not to where you came from.

Where do you live this?

The Agoge in practice

The seven phases zijn geen theorie. Ze zijn de structuur die elk traject binnen Project Leonidas draagt — of je nu kiest voor een individueel traject via The Inner Forge, or a group experience through The Gateway Experience.

In The Gateway Experience doorloop je de eerste fasen van de Agoge samen met a group of eight men. In twee dagen. Op een locatie die het werk ondersteunt. Met begeleiding die je niet loslaat.
